Talk Like a Pirate Day

September19

Arrrrr!  September 19 be International Talk Like a Pirate Day!  Crawford’s Crew had a fun day of bein’ pirates and takin’ risks!

We learned pirate lingo and gave some famous nursery rhymes “Pirattitude.”

We used place value to determine our Math Pirate Names and learned about the science of sight and how being a pirate with an eye-patch might have made both fighting and navigation difficult!

It was a fun day!  I am so thankful for the kids who were willing to take a risk with me today – dress up, act silly, travel with a motley crew and explore unchartered territory!

Terry Fox Walk/Run is Coming Up

September17

Here’s a note from our Terry Fox Committee:

Dear Parents and W.S. Hawrylak Community,

On Thursday Sept 29, our students will participate in our annual Terry Fox Walk/Run around the community.  W.S. Hawrylak has been involved with the Terry Fox campaign for 19 years!  Students are invited to wear our school colours of blue and white on the day of our walk.  For the entire week of Sept 25-30 students will be bringing in their donations to support the Terry Fox campaign and Cancer Research.  Donations may be given to teachers or be made online by logging in on the Terry Fox Foundation website http://www.terryfox.org and clicking on the Terry Fox School Run icon. Look for W.S. Hawrylak School and proceed to make your donation.  Any donation greater than $20.00 will receive a tax receipt.  If you donate online send a note to your child’s teacher informing them of your donation amount, as the class that raises the most funds for Cancer Research will receive an extra recess and a healthy treat.

We are also recording the kilometers that students walk daily for the week of Sept. 25-29, so please get out with your family and enjoy being outdoors and walk, run, bike, skateboard or rollerblade.  Students will be asked daily how many kilometers they traveled and this will be recorded for each class.  We are hoping to meet or exceed the distance that Terry walked in his Marathon of Hope.

Thank you for your support of this very worthwhile cause. Those able to join their child/class for the walk/run at 2:30 on Thursday Sept. 29 are more than welcome to join us.

Happy International Dot Day!

September15

On International Dot Day, celebrating the book “The Dot” written by Peter J. Reynolds, the students are challenged to dream big, make goals, make their mark on the world.  We explored our thoughts and then created 3D dots using the app Quiver.  Here are some images that were created, based on goals and dreams that the students have:

Here’s a short video of our kiddos working during Literacy Time.  During this time we have students working on Read to Self, Read to Someone and Work on Writing.  We will be introducing Listen to Reading and Word Work in the near future.  During this time I will be working with small groups of students and individual students.

What’s Up in Our Class

September5

Welcome back!

I’ve only worked with the students for two days and I already feel like I know them very well!  We’re going to be a great team this year!

Just a short post to let you know what we’re working on in our subjects right now:

Literacy:  We are working on establishing our Literacy Structure which is based on the About The Daily 5 in 117.  We are also re-building stamina and independence for reading and writing. I will begin conferring with students this week and the students will complete their first School Division Writing Assessment (RAD) in the coming weeks.

Numeracy:  We are working on our Working with Large Numbers unit.  This week we will focus on place value to the trillions!  I have also introduced the students to Prodigy Math online.  This is a program that will allow me to assign individual practice to students as needed as well as to use it for assessment and identify areas that need extra assistance.

Science:  Diversity of Living things will be our focus for the first unit.

Social Studies:  We will focus on Interdependence, examining the local, indigenous, and global interactions and interdependence of individuals, societies, cultures and nations. We will specifically work with countries which border the Atlantic Ocean and our Indigenous Peoples.

Health:  As a precursor to everything in our year, we are working on a mini-unit around Mindset and changing our thinking to be more flexible and resilient with our learning and decisions.

Ms Bechard will be the students’ Phys Ed teacher and Mr Kardynal will be their French teacher.  Ms Machnaik will continue to teach them music.

We will utilize Pearson e-Texts this year but there appears to be some password/access issues that we are currently trying to resolve.

Please keep an eye on the Google Calendar on this blog.  I will put all important information on that site.

I am looking forward to an amazing year!
